Allergic conditions like- Atopic Dermatitis, Eczema, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Urticarial Acne, Acne Rosacea all can be controlled or cured if you are determined to take care of your Gut & Skin Health. Friendship Between Gut & Brain
Friendship Between Gut & Brain

Did you know?
Gut & Brain are very good friends. They talk with each other in every fraction of second. Your skin knows what you eat, behaves accordingly and how you treat your skin impacts your Gut health too.

Before proceeding I must make the meanings of Microbiome, Microbiota, Pre & Probiotics very clear to you. However learned we may be, belonging to non-scientist category makes it difficult to understand these terms & even some good guidelines and articles are overlooked due to scientific terminologies.

Microbiome

What Is Microbiome?

Recent research has led to a new growing awareness of how the human body interacts with bacteria and particularly the communities of bacteria living in the intestinal tracts, known as the Gut Microbiome or Gut Flora. The microbiome is essential for human development, immunity and nutrition. The bacteria living in and on (skin) us are not invaders but beneficial colonizers.

Autoimmune Disorders

Autoimmune Disorders
Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia are all associated with dysfunctions in the Microbiome.

Know The Difference
Know The Difference

Microbiota – These are the variety of organisms like- bacteria, protozoa, fungi, viruses and archaea.
Microbiome– It is the ecological system of these within a host organism.
Explanation:
In a zoo, we get to see a variety of organisms. So, zoo is a microbiota.
Microbiome– The environment/ecological system of zoo.
Microbiota– Bugs
Microbiome– Nucleic Acid (DNA/RNA)

The distinction between two words is similar to the difference between a Map(microbiome) and the Territory the map describes(microbiota).

Prebiotics & Probiotics
Prebiotics & Probiotics

Prebiotics – These are the dietary fibers that feed the friend bacteria in your gut and also on your skin. It allows your gut and skin to produce nutrients for making colon healthier and skin too.
Source Foods – Garlic, chickpeas, almonds, onion, spring onion, legumes, lentils, kidney beans, bananas, apples, and watermelons.
Probiotics – Live bacteria found in curd and yogurt.
All fermented foods like idli, dhokla and home made fresh pickles.
Probiotics are live animals that are intended to have health benefits when consumed or applied to the body.

Skin & Its Relation To Health

Hope, you have understood the terminologies. Do not relate your skin only to beauty- it is essential to keep our skin healthy for overall health. Our skin like our gut is a home trillions and trillions of microbes which plays an important role in keeping us healthy.
Your skin microbiome is also called skin flora like in our gut there are 1,000 different bacterial species and upto 80 different fungi species living in our skin. So this symbiosis should continue for our health.
The skin microbiome changes depending upon (care) i.e. it’s ecology which can be set through your skin care routine and location. So the amount of light, moisture in the environment (of skin), dryness, being oily and dry will decide its microbiome.
For Example– A young athlete will have a very different microbiome than a woman of age 50 with a sedentary lifestyle, living together and leading a healthy lifestyle.

How Does Our Skin’s Flora Communicate With Our Immune System?

Our skin flora and our immune system are siblings. So, 80% of the immune cells are developed in the gut and supplied to the dermis, epidermis and these cells join hands with the skin’s flora. If your skin’s flora is healthy then your immunity is stronger. Your healthy skin microbiome will protect you against infections.
When Pathogenic organisms attack our skin’s healthy microbiome fights it out successfully without getting destroyed. But this can happen when we keep skin’s relative acidic environment intact i.e. its Ph of 4.5 to 5.5 should always be restored.
If your skin’s flora gets damaged by overlooking your diet and continuous use of face wash, soap, bleach, chemical peels, skin thinning ointments, baseless home care remedies, which disrupts the skin’s Ph then be ready for the invaders/pathogens to attack your skin. You will run pillar to post curing your allergies, autoimmune disorders, acne, pigmentation etc. there is a long queue of the problems.

Things To Keep In Mind

Excessive use of hand sanitizers and soaps contribute antibiotics which can create imbalance in immunity by destructing skin’s flora. Poor wound healing, ulcers, dandruff, rosacea and Psoriasis can accelerate and so can skin maturing, premature greying of hair, hair fall & hair loss.

Remember

Our skin microbiome has many roles to play in order to keep our body healthy-

  1. It communicates with our internal immune system.
  2. Fights against infections.
  3. Eases inflamations.
  4. Protects us from outside harm.
  5. Enhances our happiness & confidence.
