Juvena Herbals: Stay Fit from Home Series. Part 3: Winter Tips to Lose fat Quicker

Human body is amazing in adapting to almost every living condition. The same holds true for lifestyle as well. Leading a sedentary lifestyle makes your body resistant to even the most basic activities. Even exercising the most important muscle (heart) starts taking a toll if one leads a sedentary lifestyle for too long. Ironically, the body resists the strengthening of the muscle that is so important in sustaining life.

The opposite is true as well. Leading an active lifestyle regulates most of bodily functions, increases the efficiency of oxygen absorption, increases immunity, burns fat, lowers LDL (Low Density Cholesterol), builds muscle tissue, adds a glow to the skin and many more benefits. However, seasons/weather conditions also dictate the inclination of the human body to maintain activity or to laze up a bit.

Winters are quite beautiful in terms of the amount of cosiness one can find themselves enjoying. A cold day often leads to lazing under a blanket, eating high carb foods, drinking hot and sweet beverages etc. These are great pleasures but are harmful to your health if not done in moderation. Before we look at a few tips, let us understand a few things first.

There are two major fat types in the human system. White fat, found in bones, adipose tissue under the skin, belly, hips etc. Brown fat, found in the back of the neck and in blood stream after the white fat molecules are mobilized due to exercise.

During winters, the body responds by shivering to keep itself warm, eventually adapting to it and being comfortable with this stimulus. This shivering motion utilizes the brown fat molecules to release heat, in turn, burning extra calories as compared to summers when one doesn’t shiver. This can potentially make you lose more weight in winters naturally as compared to summers. However, this effect can be compounded even further by using the following tips.

  • Thermogens: Organic compounds used to increase the body temperature to potentially mobilize the white fat molecules. For example: caffeine, Vitamin C, Capsaicin (chillis) etc.
When to use: Before exercise (Depends on personal tolerance levels). Once a day only. Let the lower temperatures make your body work more to keep warm, in turn burning more brown fat. Thermogens are simply there to aid the conversion of the white fat to brown fat.
  • Proteins: Having a protein rich diet is also helpful in breaking down the white fat molecules, converting them to brown fat cells to produce more heat. Protein is difficult to digest, therefore the body expends more energy to process it, in turn, utilizing the energy from fat to digest it.
  • Sleeping patterns: Having an optimum sleep cycle of 7-8 hours everyday is recommended. This too can be hacked to increase the amount of fat mobilized and eventually burned. Sleeping with just enough clothing that makes you comfortable to sleep without blankets during winters, making your body burn a few extra calories to make up for the absence of a blanket really adds up in the long run.
  • Bathing: Taking a bath with cool water (twenty to twenty-three degree Celsius) keeps the body in an almost constant state of burning brown fat cells.
  • Water intake: Keep hydrated all the time. Water is the most natural fat burner. A glass every couple of hours tends to burn an extra 50kCal a day on an average.
  • Fruits: Fruits rich in Vitamin C are simply the best snack options one can use during winters. Vitamin C is a great nutrient when it comes to processing the fat molecules in the body, combined with increasing immunity.
  • Exercising: The most effective way to convert white fat cells into brown fat cells is exercise. Intense exercise, an hour a day, 3 to 4 sessions a week is more than enough to get the heart rate up, strengthening it, strengthening your body and mobilize more fat.
  • Combining the above-mentioned points almost exponentially increases the amount of fat burned. One can easily make winters as their personal transformation season. The cold temperatures relax the muscles, speeding the recovery after intense workout sessions. Low carb, high protein diet provides comfort and a mental satisfaction. Let this winter season be your best transformation season. Results will speak for themselves, and you will never step back from your New Year Resolution to get fitter.
